Types of networks:

  1. LAN: (Local Area Network) a small network that has a small range e.g. a house or small business
  2. WLAN: (Wireless Local Area Network) The above + wireless
  3. MAN: (Metropolitan Area Network) a network with a higher range bigger enough to cover a part of a city
  4. WAN: (Wide Area Network)

Network related terms:

  1. Client: A programs which sends requests to a server.
  2. Server: A program which provides services to the client.
  3. Client / Server: When a computer program,the server, sends a request to another one, the server, in order to be able to have a service.
  4. Ethernet: It is formed of 8 copper cables an enables you to connect to the Internet through your PC's port and your ISP

  16. BlueTooth: wireless technology that enables the transfer of data over short distances. It creates PAN´s (Personal Area Networks)
  17. IP Address: (Internet Protocol address) Its a set of numbers assigned to each device that can connect to a network that uses internet protocol for communication. Used for: local addressing and host or network identification.

  18. Router:It is part of a network´s switch. It determines the next network point to which information(packet) should be directed to.

  1. Firewall: a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access.
